There’s something magical about setting out to explore a new national park—the anticipation of breathtaking views, wildlife sightings, and the peacefulness that comes from being immersed in nature. But what if there was a way to fuel that sense of adventure even further, pushing you to visit places you might have otherwise overlooked? That’s where the National Parks Passport comes in.
More than just a keepsake, this little booklet is your ticket to deeper exploration. Each stamp you collect becomes a reminder of where you’ve been and a motivator to discover more. It challenges you to seek out hidden gems and lesser-known parks, encouraging you to venture beyond the familiar trails. With a National Parks Passport in hand, the thrill of exploration takes on a whole new level—transforming your trips into a quest to experience everything North America's national parks have to offer.
The Passport to Your National Parks programme launched in 1986, and was designed to inspire travellers—both locals and tourists—to explore the diverse beauty of America’s national parks. The pocket-sized booklet allows you to collect unique stamps from over 400 national parks visitors centres, with each stamp featuring the name of the park and the date of your visit, creating a personalised record of your travels (and a cheap souvenir too!).
Where to start?
Deciding to venture out into the world of the national parks passport can seem daunting, given that there are over 400 visitor centres around the USA. However, that also makes it very easy to get started.
Let’s take the three most popular airports in the USA. We have JFK Airport in New York, Los Angeles International (zero points for guessing where this is) and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International. Within 20 miles of these airports, you can find national monuments, historical parks and recreational areas, all carrying National Parks Passports!
New York - Statue of Liberty
Only 20 miles from JFK Airport is the world famous Statue of Liberty. You can purchase a National Parks Passport at the gift shop or visitor centre on Liberty Island or at Castle Clinton National Monument in Battery Park, Manhattan, before catching the ferry over to Lady Liberty. This iconic symbol of freedom not only offers stunning views of the Manhattan skyline but also serves as a starting point for your passport journey, it’s where I started mine!
Los Angeles - Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area
18 miles outside of LAX is the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. With sweeping vistas, hidden canyons, and rich biodiversity, this urban wilderness invites you to reconnect with nature and find adventure just beyond Los Angeles. The visitor centre at King Gillette Ranch, found in the heart of the NRA, has National Parks Passports available. As you hike through its trails, keep an eye out for wildlife and unique plant species that make this area so special.
Atlanta - Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park
Step into history at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park, where the civil rights movement came to life. Explore the birthplace, church, and final resting place of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader whose legacy of peace and justice continues to inspire people around the world. This site celebrates his life and legacy, and the visitor centre carries National Parks Passports. Collecting your stamp here adds a meaningful touch to your passport, connecting you to significant moments in American history.
Where to go from here?

Well - that part’s up to you. You’ve got your shiny new passport, but you don’t know what to do with it. This is the fun part. Collectors, listen up! This part will excite you.
Every (and we mean every) national park, monument, site, or historical area has its own unique collection of stamps. For example, within New York State alone, there are over 100 locations where you can find these unique stamps to fill up your passport. The passport is divided into geographical regions within the USA, with ample room for you to place your stamps.
If you’re particularly passionate about collecting, consider getting the Collector’s Edition, which has dedicated spaces for every national park in the USA. This version not only makes for a fantastic keepsake but also enhances your travel experience by encouraging you to visit parks you might not have otherwise considered.
Tips for Using Your National Parks Passport
Plan Your Trips Around Stamps: Before heading out, check the locations of parks and sites where you can collect stamps. You might discover new destinations along the way! I use The National Park Travelers Club to find visitor centres with stamps I don’t have, or even limited and special edition stamps.
Engage with Park Rangers: Don’t hesitate to ask park rangers for recommendations on must-see spots within the parks. They often have valuable insights about hidden gems that aren’t on the typical tourist radar.
Join a Community: Many travellers share their experiences and tips on social media or dedicated forums. Join a community of fellow passport collectors for inspiration and advice on where to go next.
Make It a Family Affair: Encourage family members to get their own passports, turning it into a fun family challenge. This not only makes for lasting memories but also fosters a love for nature and exploration in younger generations. I’ve dragged everyone I travel with into it!
Keep Track of Your Adventures: Consider adding notes in your passport about your experiences at each location, including the sights you saw, the wildlife you encountered, and any special moments you had. This will make your passport even more personal.
Don’t forget the Official Stamp Sets & Single Stickers: Alongside cancellations, the National Park Service offers official stamp sets and single stickers available for purchase. A set of 10 stamps are released annually, and highlight a different national park for each region. Keep an eye out for the annual sets during your visits—they can make your passport journey even more memorable!
